Competition Format
How the Lion Cubs Mathematical Contest is structured, administered, and scored.
groups Age Groups & Levels
Students participate in one of four age groups, based on their age at the start of the 2025–2026 academic year:
7–8
Group A
8–9
Group B
9–10
Group C
10–11
Group D
Each age group receives its own contest paper, tailored to the developmental level of that group. This ensures fairness and prevents older students from taking a paper intended for younger participants.
quiz Contest Structure
Each contest paper includes:
- check_circle Creative, non-routine mathematical problems
- check_circle A mix of multiple-choice and short-answer questions
- check_circle Problems that encourage logical reasoning, pattern recognition, and mathematical creativity
The contest is designed to be engaging rather than intimidating, helping students enjoy mathematics beyond the classroom.
schedule Duration & Administration
- check_circle The contest is administered during an official testing window.
- check_circle Schools conduct the contest on-site, supervised by teachers.
- check_circle Individual participants (when school participation is not possible) take the contest online, supervised by a parent acting as the Team Leader.
domain School Participation Format
Schools may register up to four groups, one for each age category. For each group:
- arrow_forward A teacher is assigned to supervise and manage up to 25 students.
- arrow_forward One teacher from the school is designated as the Team Leader, who manages credentials and coordinates with the contest organisers.
- arrow_forward All teachers share access to a common portal space for downloading contest papers, instructions, and materials.
Registration fee: KES 15,000 per team (up to 25 students), including three practice papers.
laptop Online Participation (Individual Students)
If a school is not participating:
- arrow_forward Students may join the online version of the contest.
- arrow_forward Parents act as the Team Leader and administer the contest at home or another quiet location.
- arrow_forward Students receive their raw score, but online participation does not qualify for official awards.

- check_circle Schools receive results through the Team Leaders Portal.
- check_circle Students receive certificates and feedback depending on their participation category.
- check_circle Online participants receive their raw score for personal enrichment.
